Vanessa Brantley Newton

Vanessa Brantley Newton studied fashion and children’s illustration at FIT and SVA, and loves to add unique touches to her work, including mixed media accents, collage, and hand lettering. Growing up, she was part of a diverse, tight-knit community during turbulent times of the Civil Rights movement, and learned the importance of acceptance and empowerment in shaping a young person’s life. Reading Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats, was the first time she saw herself in a children’s book, and that experience proved to be a defining moment in making her into the artist she is today. Vanessa includes children of all ethnic backgrounds in her artwork so all children can see their unique experiences reflected in the books they read, and can feel the same sense of empowerment and recognition she experienced as a young reader.
